While technological efficiency in aircraft engines and aerodynamic efficiencies have taken significant steps in each generation, it is not enough to meet aviation net zero targets. Sustainable fuels are one of the clearest paths in helping to get the industry to that goal.
Aviation has seen tremendous growth over the previous thirty years with passenger traffic in 2019 being nine times larger than in 1980. Aircraft engine efficiency improvements have helped to shallow the emissions curve but have tripled over the same periods.
